Theory

Primary Sources and Digitization in Digital History

  • The ethics of primary sources: Gerben Zaagsma, Digital History and the Politics of Digitization, Digital Scholarship in the Humanities , Volume 38, Issue 2, June 2023, Pages 830–851, https://doi.org/10.1093/llc/fqac050

Collaboration in Digital History

Even though we are often called on to be experts, digital history is a collaborative process that requires the expertise of others.

  • The ethics of collaboration: UCLA, A Student Collaborator’s Bill of Rights https://humtech.ucla.edu/news/a-student-collaborators-bill-of-rights/
  • How will you acknowledge your co-authors? Your random hallway conversations? The librarians who help guide your research through the sources they acquire, deal with copyright considerations, and host the repositories that offer sustainability solutions? Your software partners?
    • A reminder that we’ve looked at an article that models this, Craig, Diaz, Kloster, “The Coded Language of Empire: Digital History, Archival Deep Dives, and the Imperial United States in Cuba’s Third War of Independence”, The American Historical Review , 2024, 129(2), 474–516, https://doi.org/10.1093/ahr/rhae179Links to an external site. and also in our Canvas Files at File rhae179_Craig.pdf could not be included in the ePub document. Please see separate zip file for access. so you don’t have to have an AHR subscription.

Methods

Project management is a key part of managing the ethics of your project, because it helps you bring all of the pieces of a project together into a single place to craft a plan for the future. We’ll use the Project Charter to do that: https://docs.google.com/document/d/17GUIxxPypHD0xvvdpGZWSO5bhv2tonLL/edit?usp=sharingouid=102900077033325114688rtpof=truesd=true
